The Story

The history of the American Gypsy and Gypsy jewelry crafted by and for the Roma people remains a tale of intrigue and fascination of many. Roma people first arrived to the United States as slaves with Columbus in 1492, however, the largest wave of Romani immigrants came after the abolition of Romani slavery in Romania in 1864. The Roma were nomadic people and did not believe in bank accounts, stocks or bonds, so they wore their wealth on their bodies. Romani tradition was against selling gold unless there was a dire need and all but one piece, which was given to the eldest daughter, was buried with the deceased. The motifs were consistent, twisted wire, star-shaped flowers, engraved lines, horseshoes, and the profiles of women, like cameos, which they called gypsy queens. Due to the rarity and intrigue of Romani jewelry, the value is not in the gold itself, but in the beauty and scarcity of the piece.

This American Gypsy bracelet from the Retro(ca1940s) is an absolutely gorgeous example of historical Romani jewelry. This beautiful cuff bracelet is crafted in 14k gold, and is adorned with intricate etchings that include floral and scrolling motifs. The center of the front of the bracelet features a three-dimensional profile of a young woman, who is depicted with a dainty updo, jewelry, a tiara, and flowing garments. Her eyes gaze into the distance and her face is resting in a neutral position. The woman is surrounded by a horseshoe-like border, which is also decorated with etchings. The front of the bracelet also features 4, three-dimensional flowers, which beautifully tie into the piece's whimsical nature. The bracelet secures with a hidden push clasp, and the cuff also features an additional safety to further secure the bracelet. The interior of the cuff and the tongue of the push clasp are both stamped "14K". An incredible find and historically rich piece, this bracelet is sure to make any collection complete!

Measurement: The inside of the bracelet (where a wrist would rest) measures 2 3/8" wide and 2 1/4" tall. The bracelet has a weight of 58.1dwt.

Condition: The overall condition of this bracelet is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage gold setting or to the etched design. The push clasp and safety are both secure and in working order.
